“31 Days of Struggle – Learning To Find Joy In The Midst Of A Season Of Hard.” – Day 4 – How My Great-Grandparents Taught Me About Struggle’”

These people taught me all about struggle.

They came to the United States from Portugal back in the late 1800’s. They said goodbye to their friends, their family and their homeland forever and spent over 3 months crossing the Atlantic ocean on a steamship, enduring horrendous conditions and risking it all just to build a better life for their family. They made this journey to give their children and all the generations to come a chance at a better life in America.

They bought a piece of farmland and homesteaded a farm in Livermore, CA that still stands today. I live about 30 minutes away from the farm and get to visit it often. I feel at peace there. I feel such a connection to that piece of land that I cannot even explain in words. I’m so proud of the legacy that they left for all of us.

Every Fourth of July, I spend a few moments honoring them.

These people, pictured, are my maternal great-grandparents, Joe and Mary Rose. The farm they homesteaded and still stands today is pictured here, too.

Great-Grandpa & Grandma Rose: Thank you for everything you did for our family from the bottom of my heart. I never knew either one of you but I’ll always be grateful for everything you did for me without ever knowing me. I love you both so much. Your Great-Granddaughter. Jen
